AI SAFETY VS. AMERICAN SPEED: THE RAISE ACT DEBATE
About: Unmuted brings Will Rinehart (AEI) and NY Assemblymember Alex Bores to debate whether the RAISE Act is a smart state-level safeguard or a costly detour from a unified national approach. Expect sharp arguments on preemption, how “frontier” is defined, the real cost of audits, and how state rules interact with federal standards. Rinehart has warned that New York’s approach could overreach. Bores will make the case for practical, enforceable guardrails. Bring questions. Leave with a clear view of the tradeoffs.

STATUS QUO
Reports, stats, & data to know in the creator world
→ Pew Research Center’s Americans’ Social Media Use 2025 Report: Which platform was top dog this year? Well, in terms of growth, Reddit took the winner’s trophy according to this year's Pew Research Center report. Specifically, it found that 26% of American adults use Reddit and that the platform has others beat in terms of adoption from users. The full report, which you can get into here, gives the 411 on other platforms as well, including which platforms are used more by Democrats v. Republicans.
→ Buffer’s Study on Platform Engagement: Buffer took to the data to see if engaging with the comments section improved a post’s overall engagement. The answer – which not everyone will love – is a resounding “yes.” On Threads for example, engagement increased for a creator when they replied to comments by 42%. Check out the engagement increase rates for other major platforms here [and then go reply to some comments on your posts].
→ IAB’S 2025 Creator Economy Ad Spend & Strategy Report: This new report from the Interactive Advertising Bureau [IAB] revealed that creator ad spend in the U.S. is expected to reach a whopping $37 billion by the end of the year. And that’s not just the only number that may leave some jaws on the floor – the increase in growth from just last year alone, is one to know and use in negotiating contracts. HOW THEY CREATED IT
The BTS with a creator in social impact
MEET SARA LEEDS: Sara Leeds is a NYC creator and the host of Doorman Stories, a popular social media series interviewing the doormen of New York. Her multi-hyphenated approach to both interview content and lifestyle content is always anchored by a desire to tell stories that make people feel happy and think differently.
What's something you wish someone told you before starting to make content?
“Posting everyday is not what’s going to make you successful on social media. Quality over quantity.”
How do you get ideas for content? What does this process look like for you?
“I truly believe research for the sake of research is a hobby. I love random Wikipedia article deep dives, I love digital museums and newspaper archives, I love just being curious. That coupled with getting OUT - walking every inch of the city and taking in my surroundings as much as possible. That’s where I get my ideas from. Randomly discovering that the anniversary of one of my favorite films is coming up, then going down a rabbit hole about the screenplay’s origin story – that's content. Walking past an unassuming building on Park Avenue, only to discover it’s where Condé Nast hosted legendary parties – that’s content.”
When thinking of a dream content collab, what would it be? Who would it be with?
“A dream would be to evolve Doorman Stories into a scripted tv show with a major streamer or network like Netflix, NBC, or Hulu for example. And @ networks, even if I didn’t mention your name specifically - if you’re reading this - have your people call my people!”
What drew you to the niche that you’re in?
“I really wanted to tell an authentic New York story through the lens of a community that hadn’t yet been spoken to on social media. Following a quick search online, I discovered no one had yet to interview doormen, and I knew I had to jump at the opportunity.”
OPPORTUNITY BULLETIN
Creator-centric openings to go after
→ Apply for the Radisson Hotel Creator Hub: The global hotel brand has launched an exchange-based creator program that aims to generate authentic creator-made content of their properties in exchange for curated stays. The program is seeking Instagram and TikTok creators that have 1,000-30,000 followers, and of course, enjoy documenting their stays away from home. Interested creators can apply here.
→ Pitch yourself for paid campaigns: Getting paid to post about what you care about is a win for you and a win for your audience. And on the Social Currant platform, creators like you are able to connect directly with leading progressive organizations to discuss paid collaboration opportunities. Tl;DR: instead of going down the RocketReach rabbit hole to find the right contact to pitch, you can do it through the Social Currant platform when you join here.
PLATFORM UPDATES
New capabilities loading…
THREADS → The following possible feature-to-come is in the testing phase, but if it makes it to market, will be a boon for podcasters. The platform is playing with a podcast integration capability that will enable podcasts to have a profile-dedicated section to their show, and will populate previews of the show in posts the creator puts up; the preview will have a custom thumbnail – kind of like a link/web page preview, but nicer.
FACEBOOK → The platform has unveiled a new feature aimed at helping creators that are in its monetization program protect the content that they post on Facebook. The Content Protection feature, as it’s plainly being referred to, will work by scanning the platform for reuse of a creator’s original Reels and then will alert a creator if their work is found being reused in an unauthorized fashion. Once a creator’s content is found, that creator will have three options. The first is to enable tracking of the content and to have an attribution link/credit added. The second is to block, which will reduce the reach of the copycat’s content. And the third enables a creator to “release” the content and allow it to fly, but without credit. To see if you qualify for the feature, check the instructions here.
INSTAGRAM → The platform announced the ability to record 20-minute video clips in the app. The interesting piece of this is the fact that IG doesn’t push videos over three minutes along to their version of the FYP. So, what’s the reasoning behind this move? Feels like the bread-crumbing of another launch to come if you ask us.
TIKTOK → The clock app is out with a new feature called “Bulletin Board,” which walks and talks just like Instagram’s “Broadcast Channels.” The Bulletin Board feature essentially provides another in-app avenue for engaging with one’s community, enabling the send of announcements, quick tidbits, new content a creator would like their community to see, and more. To note, the feature is only available for accounts with more than 50,000 followers.
YOUTUBE → New checks [not necessarily balances] have come to the content upload process on YouTube. In addition to running checks on copyright and other elements, the platform now will check for community guidelines violations before the content ever makes it to the scroll. The goal with the pro-active approach is to prevent creators from being penalized after the fact or after they upload, gaining them strikes against their account that would’ve been avoided had it been flagged pre-upload.
