HOW THEY CREATED IT
The BTS with creators that have knocked it out of the park
Meet A.B. Burns-Tucker: Most popularly known by her social media handle IAMLEGALLYHYPE, A.B. Burns-Tucker is a social media influencer and law student who got her start by creating content about her younger brother Brandon Burns who was wrongfully convicted of murder at age 15 and sentenced to serve 50 years to life in prison. After earning virality on social media platforms like TikTok A.B. began to expand her content to include geopolitical topics like the war between Ukraine and Russia, and controversial Supreme Court decisions.
Why is making political content important to you?
“Creating political content is important to me because it allows me to engage with members of my community who might otherwise not participate in political discussions. I can't tell you how many times people have told me that I’m their primary source for news or that, while they aren’t usually interested in politics, they enjoy my content because I present the information in a way that’s accessible and engaging. It’s an honor to be a trusted voice in this space, especially in an era where misinformation and disinformation are rampant online.”
Where do you get your ideas for content?
“My ideas for content come from a variety of sources—mainstream media discussions, books I’ve read, topics other creators are exploring, and even conversations happening in my comment section. I always keep an ear to the ground for issues that resonate with my audience and provide them with meaningful, clear explanations.”
Who would be your dream collaboration?
“A dream collaboration of mine would be with Barack Obama. President Obama, if you see this, holla at me! If I could get 2-3 podcast episodes with him, it would go nonstop viral. I’m putting this dream out into the universe!”
What drew you to the niche that you are in?
“I was drawn to the legal and political niche after my explainer video on the Russia-Ukraine conflict went viral. Before that, I knew I wanted to be a creator, but I wasn’t sure how to effectively use my voice in the online space. I’ve always discussed current events with my friends, and many of them would say, “If you didn’t tell me, I wouldn’t know what’s going on because I don’t watch the news.” So, when I created that video explaining the conflict in the same way I’d explain it to my friends, and it resonated with so many people, I knew this was my calling. I love every second of it. While creating content in this space can be challenging and time-consuming, it’s so fulfilling that it hardly feels like work.”
Have you found a healthy balance between online and offline time?
“If I’m being honest, I haven’t found a healthy balance yet. In this space, I’m constantly checking the news or staying on top of the latest topics. There are moments when I have to remind myself, “A.B., log off. The stories will still be there tomorrow.” If anyone has tips for maintaining a healthier balance, I’m open to suggestions!”
